Banker meaning is the first question at a baccarat table, because the word sounds like a person and is not one. At a live table the Banker is one of two hands dealt from the shoe, and you can back it, back the Player hand, or back a tie. This page uses the Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s rules of baccarat for the figures, and it sits in the live games part of this site beside the table-game terms.
Banker meaning: a hand, not a person
Two hands are dealt, and each carries a point count from 0 to 9. In pagat.com’s baccarat rules, pip cards count at face value, pictures and tens count as zero, aces count 1, and only the last digit of a total counts. A first two-card total of 8 or 9 is a Natural.
| Bet | Wins when | Payout in the Massachusetts rules |
|---|---|---|
| Banker | the Banker hand’s count is higher | 1 to 1, less 5% of the amount won |
| Player | the Player hand’s count is higher | 1 to 1 |
| Tie | both counts are equal | at least 8 to 1 |
If the Banker bet meets a tie it is returned to you, and a Player bet in a tie is returned as well.
Banker player: the phrase and the roles in the rules
Banker player is a phrase people use for whoever backs the Banker hand. The Massachusetts rule book has no such role. It names these instead:
- The curator, the player who accepts the dealing shoe and deals the cards at a land table.
- The player with the highest wager on the Banker’s hand, who is handed those two cards face down, views them and returns them face up.
- The dealer calling the game, who announces each Point Count.
On a streamed table you do none of these. The studio’s dealer or host handles the cards, and your part is the bet.
Baccarat banker commission: where the 5% comes from
The Massachusetts rules say a winning Banker wager is paid at odds of 1 to 1, except that the licensee extracts a vigorish equal to 5% of the amount won, unless the table is EZ Baccarat. Evolution’s Baccarat page does not print the commission, so this figure is the regulator’s.
An example with round numbers: a ₱1,000 Banker bet that wins pays ₱1,000. The 5% commission is ₱50, so ₱950 is your net win, which is 0.95 to 1.
Evolution’s No Commission Baccarat page changes that. It says there is no 5% commission to pay on Banker wins, except when the Banker scores 6, which pays half the original bet, or 0.5:1. The same page names a Super 6 side bet at 15:1. In peso terms a winning ₱1,000 Banker bet scoring 6 returns ₱500 in winnings at that table.
Which version a table runs is something to read on its own info screen. Roulette has a counterpart to this cost in its zero pocket, priced out in the roulette zero pocket in pesos.
What the third-card rule decides
After two cards each, the rules fix whether a third card is dealt. Nobody chooses.
- If either hand is a Natural (8 or 9), no more cards are dealt.
- Otherwise the Player hand draws on 0 to 5 and stays on 6 or 7.
- If the Player hand stays, the Banker hand draws on 5 or less.
- If the Player hand drew, the Banker hand follows the table below.
| Banker’s first two cards total | Banker draws when the Player’s third card is |
|---|---|
| 0, 1, 2 | always draws |
| 3 | draws unless the Player’s third card is 8 |
| 4 | 2 to 7 |
| 5 | 4 to 7 |
| 6 | 6 to 7 |
| 7 | stands |
The table is the Massachusetts rules’ Table 1. The pair bets and bonus bets that ride on the same hands are a separate topic, covered on the side bet meaning page.
