The bust meaning in blackjack is one rule: a hand whose points go over 21 loses on the spot. In the Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s blackjack rules, a player’s wagers are collected with the cards as soon as that hand exceeds a hard total of 21. This page reads the word the way it sounds at a table, and it links back to how playing cards are counted. On 11 October 2026 the TTTJILI lobby’s Live Casino lane showed blackjack tables on its Evolution tab, Lightning Blackjack and Infinite Blackjack among them, so this is the word you meet there.
What bust means at a blackjack table
A bust is a total above 21 on cards you have drawn. Follow one hand:
- You hold 10 and 6, a hard 16.
- You hit and the next card is a 9.
- 16 plus 9 makes 25: bust, hand over, wager gone, even if the dealer later busts as well.
Aces are what make busting less certain. The Wizard of Odds calls a hand “hard” when it has no aces or its aces must count as 1 to avoid going over, and “soft” when an ace can still count as 1 or 11. Ace and 6 is a soft 17; draw a 9 and the ace drops to 1, giving a hard 16 that has not busted.
The Wizard of Odds notes that going over 21 is known as “breaking” or “busting”, so a dealer who says break means bust.
Words you hear around a bust
| Word | What it means | Example at the table |
|---|---|---|
| Bust (or break) | Total over 21 | 10 + 6 + 9 = 25 |
| Hard hand | No ace, or every ace counts 1 | 10 + 6 = hard 16 |
| Soft hand | An ace can still count 11 | Ace + 6 = soft 17 |
| Hit | Take one more card | Hitting hard 16 risks a bust |
| Stand | Take no more cards | Standing on 16 cannot bust |
A poker player never says bust about a hand, because poker has no total to exceed. The nearest poker word for giving a hand up is a fold, covered in what a fold means in poker instead.
How often each dealer upcard busts
The dealer has no choice. The dealer draws until reaching 17 or more, so the card the dealer shows decides how likely a break is. The Wizard of Odds publishes the odds for each upcard; the figures below are from its eight-deck table where the dealer stands on soft 17 and has already checked for blackjack and not found it.
| Dealer upcard | Dealer busts | In every 1,000 rounds, about |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 35.35% | 354 |
| 3 | 37.41% | 374 |
| 4 | 39.55% | 395 |
| 5 | 41.79% | 418 |
| 6 | 42.29% | 423 |
| 7 | 26.20% | 262 |
| 8 | 24.40% | 244 |
| 9 | 22.90% | 229 |
| 10-value card | 23.01% | 230 |
| Ace | 16.69% | 167 |
Averaged over every upcard the same table gives 29.59%. A different deck count or a dealer who hits soft 17 shifts these numbers slightly, so find the soft 17 rule and deck count a Live Casino blackjack table states, and match them to this rule set before comparing.
What happens in the round when a hand busts
Here is the order in which a bust plays out under the Massachusetts rules.
- You hit and the total passes 21.
- The dealer collects your wagers along with your cards at once.
- The dealer still plays out their own hand, unless every player at the table has exceeded 21.
- If every player has busted, the dealer draws no further cards and collects the original face-up card too.
This is why a bust is worse than any other loss: it is settled before the dealer draws, so a dealer who later breaks cannot rescue it. A bluff cannot save a bust either, because blackjack has a dealer who follows a set draw rule; the reason is set out in the poker bluff meaning that blackjack lacks.
When is it worth risking a bust?
Never hitting is not the safe choice it feels like. The Wizard of Odds measured a player who never hits a hard 12 or more, with every other decision by correct basic strategy, and found a house edge of 3.91%. It gives 0.43% as the house edge under the Atlantic City rules it assumes (dealer stands on soft 17, split up to 4 hands, double after split, double any two cards).
The gap between 3.91% and 0.43% is the price of fearing the word bust. For the right play against each upcard, read the basic strategy chart for the exact rule set printed on the table. This page prints no player bust percentage by hard total, so use the chart rather than a remembered number.

FAQ
What does bust mean in blackjack?
It means the points in a hand went over 21. The Massachusetts rules collect a player's wagers together with the cards the moment the hand exceeds a hard total of 21, so there is nothing left to play for.
Does the dealer bust at the Live Casino blackjack tables?
Yes. The dealer follows a fixed draw rule, and when the dealer's own total passes 21 every player who has not already busted wins. Find out which soft 17 rule a blackjack table states before you sit.
Ano ang pinakamababang bust chance ng dealer?
Sa eight-deck, stand-on-17 table ng Wizard of Odds, ang dealer na may Ace na upcard ay nag-bust ng 16.69% lang. Ang 10-value card ay 23.01%, at ang 6 ang pinakamataas sa 42.29%.
Is a soft 17 a bust?
No. A soft hand holds an ace that can still count as 1 or 11, so one more card cannot break it the way it can a hard 17. Ace and 6 plus a 9 is a hard 16.
