TTTJILI Playing Cards: One Pack, Counted Three Ways

Playing cards are a single object with several rulebooks. The same 52 cards are worth 10 at one table, zero at the next and only a rank at a third, which is why a player who learns one casino card game can still misread another. This page builds the pack first, then shows how blackjack, baccarat and poker each read it, and points to the word pages that go deeper.

How playing cards make up a 52-card pack

The standard international pack, as pagat.com describes it, holds ace, king, queen, jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2 in each of four suits. That is 13 ranks times 4 suits, which makes 52 cards. The hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades suits were introduced by French cardmakers in the late fifteenth century.

Pagat.com adds that the joker was invented in America in the mid nineteenth century, and that other games use smaller packs such as 32 cards, which run ace down to 7 in each suit. Which pack a table uses decides every count that follows.

Card value in blackjack

Card value in blackjack is the number each card adds to your total, and pagat.com gives the standard count. Cards 2 to 10 count at face value, jacks, queens and kings count as 10, and an ace counts as 1 or 11, taking 11 unless that would send the hand over 21.

A hand that goes over 21 loses at once, and the word for that is covered on the page about what bust means in blackjack. Card value in baccarat

Baccarat counts the same cards a different way, and pagat.com’s baccarat page spells it out. Pip cards count at face value, aces as 1, and pictures and tens as zero, and only the last digit of the total matters: 7 plus 6 is 3, not 13.

Poker cards: ranks, hands and the words around them

Poker cards are read differently again: no totals, only the best five-card hand. Pagat.com ranks the categories from highest to lowest as below, and any hand in a higher category beats any in a lower one.

Poker adds a vocabulary of betting words. To drop out of a hand is to follow the fold rule in poker. Betting every chip you have is explained in what going all in means, a forced starting bet in what an ante means, and betting strong with a weak hand in what a bluff is in poker.

Card value side by side: one hand, three readings

The quickest way to see why card value depends on the table is to count the same two cards under each rulebook. The table below uses a king and a 7, then a 7 and a 6, from the value tables above.

Blackjack adds the values and fears 21, baccarat adds them and keeps one digit, and poker never adds anything: it compares ranks and suits. A player who carries the blackjack habit of adding everything into baccarat will misjudge a 13 that is really a 3.

Payouts: what the cards pay, and what that is not

A payout tells you what a winning bet earns, such as roulette’s 35 to 1 on one number, which turns an example ₱100 straight-up win into ₱3,500 of profit.
