Red or black roulette is the plainest bet on the layout: you back every red number, or every black one, and the win pays 1 to 1. It also hides the one fact that decides how it pays on average, which is the zero. Red or black roulette: what the bet pays
The Massachusetts rules define a red wager as a bet that the ball rests in a compartment whose number has a red background, and a black wager the same for black. Both are paid at 1 to 1. Here is the payout table in those rules for the bets you will see beside them.

Paid at 1 to 1 means a ₱100 bet that wins returns ₱100 in winnings plus your ₱100 stake.
How the zero pockets change the odds
On a standard layout 18 of the 36 numbers are red, 18 are black, and the zero pockets are neither. The pocket count depends on the wheel. Evolution describes its European and French wheels as the numbers 1 to 36 plus a single zero, and its American Roulette as 1 to 36 plus a zero and a double zero.

The same 18 numbers face one more losing pocket on the double-zero wheel, which is why its chance is lower.
Zero rules and what they cost in pesos
Each wheel has a rule for what a red bet does when the ball lands on zero. The Massachusetts rules give these:
- On a single-zero wheel, wagers on red, black, odd, even, 1 to 18 and 19 to 36 are lost on zero.
- On a double-zero wheel, the licensee chooses between taking one half of each such wager or the entire wager when the ball lands on 0 or 00.
A worked example with a ₱100 bet, assuming every pocket is equally likely. Each figure is the average result per ₱100 over very many spins, not what any one session does:

Evolution’s French Roulette page describes a third rule, La Partage: on an even-money bet, a zero loses only half your bet. The Banker bet in baccarat carries a comparable standing charge, priced at 5% of the win in the Banker bet commission explained.
Even-money bets beside red and black
Six even-money bets share the 1 to 1 line, and each covers 18 of the 36 numbers. They differ only in how the 18 are chosen: by colour, by odd or even, or by low and high. All six lose on zero on a single-zero wheel.
The table’s paytable still rules. Evolution’s Lightning Roulette page says its non-multiplied Straight Up bets pay 29:1 while red, black and dozens pay as standard roulette. A variant can change the straight-number payout without touching red or black, so read the paytable of the table you open.
Reading the results panel without misreading it

Each spin is independent of the one before it. The panel records what happened, and it gives red no more or less chance on the next spin than it had on the first.
